A while back, like 20 years ago, at least...

He would give the occasional interview and sometimes he'd answer with "I pay my taxes" in a mocking tone. Mocking the adage, and usually accompanied by some ridiculous thing that paying ones taxes wouldn't justify.

I think Letterman is just a whole lot more Colbert and a whole lot less P.J. O'Rourke (the latter wanting to make people laugh, but only caring about the feelings of the people he wants to be at parties with --ergo, PJ can make fun of us, without apology, but the wealthy, conservatives he hangs with, he has to let everyone know it's all in fun and he doesn't really mean it).

Obviously, I think a lot more highly of Dave.
