Booker has been on the national stage since he moved to Newark in 1998, fresh out of Yale Law. Oprah has been a supporter ever since. Remember the $100 million dollar Zuckerberg gift on her show a few months ago? Booker was not catapulted, he was escorted on to the main stage, as if he were a prince. Deemed Newark's savior in 2000 ( http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,996967,00.html). He has kept his names in the news ever since, this is his 1st screw up on the national stage, though, those of us in NJ have been watching his hubris get the best of him for a while.

At one point it was anticipated he would be the 1st African-American in the White House. Gwen Ifill wrote a book about new African-American politics a few years ago. She chose 4 African-American pols to focus on, Booker was one of them. You don't get to be on Meet The Press out of the blue.
