1. Heck, it's not been long since our culture has recognized intelligence in our own fellow humans...

... and too many of us still think we are superior to other sorts.

Racism is alive and well, even though we humans are all one species. I've known many bright dogs and birds, animals clearly more sentient and alive and more joyful then a few sad dim soul people I've met.

It amuses me when people put so much energy into finding intelligent life in outer space but haven't yet recognized intelligence in our own related species here on earth.

How the hell are we going to talk to space aliens if we can't even talk to species we've evolved on the same planet with, species we share ancestors with?

Tool monkeys such as ourselves may be rare in this universe, with a propensity for self-destruction. Perhaps we are uninteresting and ugly to more intelligent life forms.

Maybe that's why I enjoyed Star Trek IV. That alien whale in space wasn't paying any attention to us tool monkeys. It was looking for whales.
