Germany has a slightly more conservative system based on regional and industry-wide insurance co-ops (this was essentially Max Baucus's plan 5 years ago).

Why the American left picked Canada's particular (and fairly unusual) model as the hill we had to die on to achieve universal care, I'll still never understand.
