In the old "expanded universe", she got a little bit of force and lightsaber training from Luke, but was so swamped holding the new Galactic Senate together that she never really progressed to "kick ass and take names".

But part of the reboot that came with these movies was to throw away the entire EU cannon. They've got a blank slate to work with.
