Because they knew that guns were rare.

While the cops should take this seriously, they might have taken it a little too seriously - now any idiot can cause mayhem with just a phone call:

Our local HS had a threat, they just started posting a couple of cops there to keep an eye on things. You know they're there, but they just hang out and are cool. I'm sure that they'll go away soon, if they haven't already.
