The issue is whether the process is working. It isn't. The purpose of debates is to learn the candidates positions on public policy. Gotcha questions on personal character, current poll numbers, whether you paid your credit card bill on time in 2004 do nothing to enlighten voters on the candidates positions.

It's first and foremost a disservice to the viewing public. Just because the Republicans don't like it doesn't make it anymore palatable.
