He's smart, a successful fundraiser, believes in a "50 state" local elections matter policy, he's much more amenable than DWS to listen to people outside his own circle, he's responsive to public opinion, and demonstrated an ability to change his mind based on that "listening"/"responsiveness" when he changed his position on the debate debacle specifically because he recognized the public disapproval of the policy being enacted and enforced by DWS.

He's also a clear and eloquent spokesperson for Democratic values who has a demonstrated success of promoting and selling those values to traditional Republican bases of support. (White males, rural voters, self-identifying "traditional Christians", "blue-collar" workers.) Most importantly, he has a record of electoral successes both as a candidate and an organizer.
