George W. Bush talks with father's biographer at event, avoids Rumsfeld-Cheney criticisms [View all]
UNIVERSITY PARK Former President George H.W. Bush was no Ronald Reagan or John F. Kennedy, his biographer said Sunday.
But while Bush wasnt a transformative figure, he had a quiet, persistent charisma and put what he thought was best for the country over his personal politics, author Jon Meacham told the 41st presidents son, former President George W. Bush, Sunday night.
Person after person, at every stage in his life, almost anyone who met him
believed he was someone in whose hands the affairs of the nation and the world would be safe, Meacham said. And that is a particular kind of gift, a particular kind of charisma that doesnt fit in the usual categories.
The younger Bush moderated the discussion with Meacham at the George W. Bush Presidential Center. Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George Herbert Walker Bush has made national headlines because in it, the elder Bush blasts his sons defense secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, and Vice President Dick Cheney.
