108. Attacks in Paris: Reactions From the Ground

The best way to fight terror is with human solidarity

In the face of multiple terror attacks that killed more than 100 people in Paris on Friday, local residents took to social media to offer safe haven and track loved ones in the city.

Under the hashtag #PorteOuverte, which translates to #OpenDoor, Parisians offered shelter, a place to sleep—and usually a bit of hospitality—via Twitter.

On Facebook, concerned friends outside Paris were able to use the social media network’s Safety Check function to see if loved ones were near the terror attacks.

On Twitter, this offer came from the 18th arrondissement, the district south of the Stade de France, where multiple explosions were reported during a Germany-France soccer match—an offer of tea and clean sheets.

French news reported that Parisian taxis had turned off their meters to help people get home.
