"What's to defend?". Do they defend Assad, a cruel hereditary dictator who has no compunctions about killing his citizens like flies? Do they defend their own religious community? Matthews, like most Rethugs seems to have absolutely no understanding of the history of that whole region of the world. The whole 'country' concept is foreign, corresponding to arbitrary, artificial divisions drawn on maps by the French and British after WWI at the implosion of the Ottoman Empire. Loyalty to artificial nationality is not a well established concept - Lebanese and Syrians do not consider themselves to be different people or to belong to different countries. The same with Jordanians as well. This is an area of the world where loyalties are historically first to family, second to tribe, and third to religious identification. Loyalty to a 'flag' or 'country' as Matthews understands it, is a foreign concept.
