he used to protest but now it is such a fixture (my daughter will not give up Christmas!) that my granddaughters would hound him to death -- they want their tree! Nowadays I spend xmas with them...

It's not really religious, it's just that he grew up never having that experience but since it is not really religious in their family (and my granddaughters have been raised Jewish...had their bat mitzvahs etc) it hasn't ruffled any feathers...
