55. I was in college in the mid to late sixties.

A girl in our dorm came back from an illegal abortion and was bleeding badly in her dorm room, refusing to tell the house mother. Those of us on her floor took it upon ourselves to call an ambulance. She made it. Over the years I've heard similar stories from many others. I especially remember one other detail from that experience. Through chance, the girl's roommate was not a friend of hers and a vocal "Christian," well before it was a more common thing. The roomie was engaged and always spouting off about how she and her fiance were "saving it for marriage." She left to stay with a friend on another floor, disgusted that her roommate came back in dire straits and badly needing help. She later righteously claimed that it was God's way of punishing her roommate for her terrible "sins." (I'm not making this up or embellishing this). Needless to say, some quick reassignments of rooms were made. Sympathies were largely with the the girl who'd had the abortion and nothing more was ever said.
