(22,271 posts)I had boyfriends that lived in the (then) wealthier Orange County area and knew of several of their female acquaintances who knew the "right" doctors. The poor ones were more likely to cross the border since it was close and cheap (though not necessarily sanitary).
It's all about control of women, whether it's religion or southern culture.
Speaking of guys having no repercussions. There was a girl in my senior year who was OBVIOUSLY pregnant. Back then they used to kick girls out of school for being pregnant and not married (horrendous, but true). I also remember the female gym teachers looking the other way when it came shower time. So did the rest of the teachers, apparently, because she did graduate on time. She had her baby a week later. But, as usual, the fathers were never threated with expulsion. They were usually whisked off to another town or another state if there was any hint of a paternity suit and all of a sudden none of their relatives had any idea where they were.
