(30,520 posts)She loved that store. When I was quite young and worked in Manhattan, there was a Woolworth across the street from my job (3rd Ave. & 42nd St.). We didn't have a cafeteria, so I would eat at their lunch counter several times a week. Unfortunately, some months later all Woolworths were closed. It must have been 1997 because I just looked it up and that's the year when they went out of business.
As for the John Wanamaker's building, it's a beauty and I'm glad that Macy's took it over and it's still in use. The bldg. had remained empty for some time when Lord & Taylor bought it. When they decided to close that store I was afraid that the bldg. would be repurposed for offices or, worse yet, demolished. I was thrilled to hear that Macy's bought it.
