In reply to the discussion: Jews gather nationwide on Chanukah to challenge Islamophobia and racism [View all]politicman
(710 posts)On the contrary, I am not trying to downplay that over half of religious bias crimes are committed against Jews. What I am trying to do is firstly put in perspective the individual hate crimes (keep in mind that they are recognised as crimes) against Jews with the national public bigotry and racism against Muslims at the moment.
Like I have said multiple times now, talk back radio, national commentators, local and national politicians and even presidential candidates are vilifying and advocating policies directed at Muslims on a very public national scale.
Even though hate crimes against Jews are bad, at least they are recognised as such by the authorities, but what is happening with the Muslims right now is an attempt to institutionalise the racism and bigotry through policy proposals. The bigotry and racism against Muslims evident in national politics right now is actually applauded by a big segment of the American public.
So even though the statistics provided show that Jews are the victims of half of all hate crimes, those statistics don't necessarily portray an accurate picture because what is happening against Muslims on a national scale right now doesn't show up in the statistics but is still racism and bigotry in full public view.
I don't know what to do anymore, if I mention Israel and Jews in the same sentence then someone interprets it as anti-Semitism because as I'm being told I can not equate Jews with Israel, yet when Trump makes remarks about what Israel should do in a room full of Jewish people then his remarks are interpreted as anti-Semitism because he mildly suggested that Israel should make sacrifice to attain peace in the mid-east and that insults those Jews in the room.
