2. "Harry" used to come through our...

neighborhood in Brooklyn once a week and sell women's clothes out of the trunk of his car. In the summer he wore a short-sleeved shirt and I could see the numbers on his arm. I asked my mother about and she told me to ask my father, so I did.

He was at Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge, but nothing, he said, prepared him for what he saw when they opened the gates at Dachau. I was six at the time and he told me the whole story. Then, a bit later, we both watched a documentary on a local NYC TV station. It was called, "Remember Us."

My mother did not want me to watch, but my Dad insisted. I am forever grateful that he let me watch and that I was able to have breakfast with him this morning.
