Theaters don't actually make much money, and almost nothing on ticket sales; the profit is in the incidentals, like popcorn, 3d glasses, and the commercials in between shows.
Once upon a time, I was a projectionist and general manager of a movie theater. You'd be amazed at the stuff people try and pull. Crack smoking, child molesting, you name it, people tried it. Granted, it's not like the warning advertisement is going to stop people from smoking crack or exposing themselves to families, but I guess they feel it's better than nothing.
Most of the good theaters in our area now have assigned seating (yay!), so you don't actually have to show up until five minutes after the trailers start.
