I've been to the Malheur Wildlife Refuge HQ, which I believe is where they're holed up, according to reports. It's in pretty open country, quite isolated from anything else (it's not actually in the small town of Burns, which some reports may have made people think). Wide open fields of fire, in other words. Getting close enough to introduce gas would place whoever did it in deadly danger if the militants decided to open fire. These jerkoffs chose pretty much a perfect location for this asshattery.

I agree with you: this has to be handled delicately and patiently to avoid creating martyrs (and to avoid being the party that escalates into actual violence). Wait them out. Cut off electrical power so they have to rely on their generators. Establish communication, if possible (which I suspect it is: their intent is to be noticed and their grievances heard). Don't make this into Ruby Ridge or Waco.
