My husband's great grandfather, Thomas Sadler Roberts, who studied birds in Minnesota from the 1870s on, carried a Marble Arms Game Getter gun, with dual barrels, .22 and .44, when out birding in the wilderness. He'd shoot birds for specimens with the .22 and had the .44 in case a bear came on him.
