It's almost as likely that at least some of them would have simply been beaten to within an inch of their lives, or the gunshots wouldn't have proved fatal. And those who survived would have just been locked up for most of their lives, and/or lost many of their rights as citizens if they were ever released.

So it is quite conceivable that they wouldn't have literally been buried by now...
