But considering the sorry state of campaign regulations, isn't it weird how so many Republicans (like Cruz) and other conservatives (like D'Souza) still can't figure out how to skirt such a threadbare system?

What's most interesting to me is that when Cruz was running in 2012, he was busy bad-mouthing the economy to the voters, but he and his wife took out a loan that was very dependent on the continued good performance of the economy and the stock market. He was telling his supporters one thing, while gambling his personal, professional, and political life on exactly the opposite.

I wonder if Cruz's supporters ever consider this contradiction? He put his money where his mouth wasn't.
