In reply to the discussion: Arabs’ sexual harassment in Germany and its effect on Merkel’s plans [View all]DFW
(54,941 posts)Any more than it is Merkel's or Gabriel's place to get involved in our health care or student loan debates.
We are all facing very different local situations, and would be wise to stick with offering suggestions on how to solve our own problems rather than Merkel's. Obviously our candidates deplore the situation facing German women just as my German friends deplore the situation of Americans stuck with student loans that plague their financial situation for decades. Our trigger-happy cops would have handled the Köln situation differently, no doubt. Maybe with some unpleasant "collateral damage," too. The Germans certainly handle the financing of University educations for their citizens differently as well. But both are issues that need to be addressed locally, not by politicians from overseas, especially ones in the middle of an election campaign. Kudos to Sanders, Clinton and O'Malley for (so far, anyway) realizing this.
