(21,046 posts)The reviewers thought Brahms wrote symphonies of ghastly noise. Now they are considered to be very pleasant and harmonious. They were new music in the 1880s of Vienna. They were considered astringent. "During his lifetime his music was found uningratiating, if not forbidding, and frankly rather difficult. The First Piano Concerto in 1859, offered audiences a "'waste, barren dreariness'". (from classical-music.com)
Tchaikovsky called Brahms a "giftless bastard."
It depends on what time period you're talking about, what peoples' ears are used to.

I've studied classical music for fifty five years, on two instruments and voice, since I barely started the first grade.
I grew up on 60s-70s-80s rock.
The Eagles were damn good. Not groundbreaking, but technically competent. And I don't understand why people hated them so much. Maybe because they sold lots of records and had lots of hits? I saw Don Henley in 2000 on the first night of the Inside Job Tour and enjoyed it thoroughly.
Rolling Stone hated progressive rock too, because they thought guys with classical chops (Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson) were "pretentious". That's like my stupid neighbors who think anyone who can do anything competently is a "showoff".
You want a sorry excuse for a band, try KISS, who are a real joke, or anything after the late 80s. Like grunge. No way in hell. Sorry.
