I was stabbed nine times in Central America while investigating illegal aid to the Contras. And that's not the worst of it, that worst happened in the USA.

They just disappeared liberal activists everywhere in Latin America, but as an American citizen, I enjoyed just enough "gringo privilege" to not get a bullet to the temple. Another Portlander, Ben Linder, was assassinated in Nicaragua during the Iran-Contra hearings. So much for gringo privilege.

There was plenty of extra-legal conduct, it wasn't just an idea, it was a money-making "Enterprise." What is always missing in these scenarios is the fact that the highest law enforcement officer in the land is typically at the top of the covert chain of command too whenever a Republican is President it seems. Probably the same guy when a Dem is in the White House, just operating independently of the legitimate command then. As they say in Latin America, "It is the government that does these things."

Ashcroft didn't fold for outright disregard for law, he did bend it too far though. Meese was one of the ratf**kers thru and thru.
