There are so many things that it is easier for a communal entity - called the government to do.

Plowing streets, police, fire, road maintenance etc are the most obvious. It is on the more subtle needs that the public good is less obvious, but just as important if part of your definition of a successful economy is that it meets the needs of the most vulnerable.

Have we really moved from a country that cheered George Bailey to one that admired Potter, for making the most money? I know "It's a wonderful life" is fiction, but I can see that Bailey could be called a Democratic socialist!
