Specifically because they undermined the country.
They count on the electorate being too stupid to see the truth and be swayed by pure emotion.

The Democrats use logic and morals to justify their positions.
The Republicans use fear and illogical emotions to justify theirs.

It remains to be seen if this strategy works but I have very little faith in the overall intelligence level of our electorate.
