You can have a country that takes care of it workers, puts an emphasis on the environment, and provides a huge social safety net yet still be a leading economic power. Germany is just that. After China, Germany is the second largest exporter of manufactured goods in the world. If you want to buy something and you want the best, you buy a German product.
Why can't we have that?
Their cities are clean and feel safe wherever you go. Public transportation is amazing and if you live in the right areas, you hardly even need to own a car except for convenience. Their communities are a nice blend of commercial and residential properties and you essentially live within walking distance of where you do your daily shopping, the train station that brings you to work, and the social center of your community.
Sure, you pay more in taxes, but you get so much out of it. As with anything else, you get what you pay for. You pay crap you're going to get crap.
