he appears to have suffered either a mishaps like being kicked in the head by a large farm animal, fell off the tractor or some farm equipment or had a stroke or something of the sort that caused all or nearly all the nerves on that side of his face have "let go" such that he has paralysis. Have seen/met others with that condition and they got it by various means, it's why he wore his hat large and low.
