In multiple lawsuits filed against Mr Trump across the country, which the candidate is contesting, plaintiffs claimed they were duped into buying products or property because they believed in the billionaire, when he was actually involved in the businesses in name only.

One of the most serious allegations facing Mr Trump is a national class action lawsuit that claims he violated racketeering laws through the now defunct university, in which he had a 93 per cent stake.

Another class action lawsuit has made similar claims. In a separate case brought by the New York state attorney-general’s office, a state Supreme Court judge ruled in 2014 that Mr Trump was personally liable for the university operating without a state licence.
