never took U.S.-type tests in Italian schools. Our exams are essay and math problem-based, not multiple choice or true false.

Perhaps they meant to say in the U.S.? Sorta like the World Series and Super Bowl World Champions?

I'm not trying to diminish this young man's accomplishment, by the way.
