(10,559 posts)DOES NOT MAKE A POLICE STATE.
Felony records don't ever go away, so that straw man is gone. Names and addresses are available on searchable databases with input from driver's licenses, voter registration and ID (again, not a police state) and all of the information is findable through dozens of websites already in existence for minimal or no fees, depending on which one you look at. These problems are solvable - the key is the Will to do so, against monied interests.
Common sense is key here - the "straw purchaser" problem is solvable with minimal data programming (IT professional here - creating these types of queries is not difficult) but the problem is not "which households housing felons have guns when they shouldn't" but "who shall go fetch them?" It wasn't that long ago that one agency came up with a list of several thousand people who had legally gotten guns when they shouldn't have, BUT NO AGENCY WOULD RETRIEVE THEM BECAUSE OF BUDGET ISSUES.
I am RABIDLY ANTI STUPID PEOPLE WITH GUNS. Stupid people is a broad brush, and includes those who don't use common sense gun safety protocols (responsible gun owners have a list and can lecture on this non-stop), in homes where people with dementia or other mental illness that can impair judgment can access them, or if you have committed felonies within a sensible time period or are on parole for felonies, etc.
I stand by my post. You are entitled to disagree with it, but I challenge you to refrain from nonsense like "police state" about accessing public records; leave that type of description to things like "arresting people for being Moslem or Jewish".
