Domestic violence is no joke and having a neighbor check in does little good because it always recurs and it always escalates, no matter which partner is doing the hitting--or if both of them are.

Next time, just let the cops handle it. While the biker jacket got you a little respect this time, it won't always be the case.

Worst one for me was a rooming house in Boston, argument from down the hall spilt out in the hall. I had no phone, cell phones were owned only by the wealthy few, and there was nothing I could do. I left for work at eleven, it had been quiet for a little while, and heard a woman sobbing. The glass in the front door was broken and there was blood all over the walls. I called the cops from work, reported her room number and gave the description of the pimpy looking guy leaning against his car out front, the blood on his clothing signaling he had something to do with the whole thing.

If I ever have to live in a cheap rooming house again, you can bet I'll have a cell phone.
