by suggesting that you run Tails (https://tails.boum.org/) if you really want to lock your system down and protect your privacy.

For Windows 7, first click Start, then Control Panel. Locate the Windows Update link and click on it

Vista is a resource hog. 7 runs much faster on the same hardware than Vista.
