If he returns to the Senate, he will probably return to being an independent, since that's how his constituents see him. His appeal is not one of party loyalty, but of putting Democratic ideals ahead of the current strategy. It's not just a run for office, but an attempt to change the direction of our party to accommodate more progressive candidates. If he fails with that, it's pretty clear the party wants little to do with him or his views.
