The Republicans these days (since Nixon? since Reagan?) have encouraged U.S. Americans to fear people different from them, conveniently forgetting that all of us came from somewhere, and our distant ancestors did too. Far enough back, we're all related and standing around a fire naked talking about that day's hunt.
"Cul de sac puppies" is a potent use of language. Very nicely chosen for current circumstances.
Some writers, probably a distinct minority, urge that the Stranger be welcomed, be clothed if naked, fed if hungry, and cared for in general. We haven't heard any such thing from the Republican party for decades, and it's worse now than ever.
