(7,947 posts)It's not that linear. The person losing their job in the moment doesn't care how it's better for the abstract greater good of humanity. Just like the person getting a job isn't going to care if it came at the expense of someone else's job, because they need to eat. Just like the people making the technology for automation don't really care if it puts someone out of work, because their job is to create the automating technology.
Mechanization/Industrialization has been good for the common people, but it's also come at the cost of whatever percentage of species, and the environment as a whole. We don't really care about that though, because it's been good for us.
Not that the Luddites were doing anything for some abstract greater good. They were as selfish as anyone else.
