....who would ultimately vote in favor of the Republican, and give us whatever they put forward.

Granted, it's more complicated than that, but it's not a chance worth taking, considering the fact Republicans would be dividing their party in half more or less giving the Democratic nominee the election on a silver platter. Not to mention the Supreme Court and likely the Senate as well.
