7. My doubts are based on simple psychology.

Eyewitness testimony is unreliable. This man was witness to a stressful, traumatic event, during which he was primarily concerned with his own survival and the survival of his friends. Now he's trying to recall details well after the fact. Because memory is so unreliable and so plastic, it is very easy to convince yourself that you remember something that may or may not have happened.

Also, his story is pretty fantastic. And he doesn't have a shred of proof.
