After looking into it somewhat, it actually makes more sense for an innocent person to request trial by judge, since the judge should be more intelligent than 12 randoms from your county. The guilty people only need 1 of the 12 randoms to get it wrong and then get set free.

In this case I don't see why the accused would want a trial by judge. It sounds like he is obviously guilty. But maybe the other poster is correct in saying the judge is getting paid off? I guess we have to wait and see. All that aside, it really sucks for the OP. He lost a family member for no good reason and nothing will bring him back. You have my sympathies and thoughts, OP.
