4. Mencken was clever. Also an elitist who opposed representative Democracy entirely and favored the

rule of a merit based white elite. He was certainly a supremacist and had specific disdain for African Americans even larger than that he held for black people elsewhere and his views about Jews were maybe even worse.
The quote above is in fact an argument against democracy based on the premise that regular working people are simpletons. It's really not all that savory. It's really the point of view of the right or of the top bit of the 1%.
Trump is exactly the sort of person Mencken said should be in charge, he's a proven business engine and by having more money he's also earned the right to rule.

Mencken would have hated Bernie Sanders. In every single way. He loathed Jews.

But yes. He was clever.
