What have we become as a society that we cannot assist these people as they go through a rough time (I've been through this, also). What does taking their $1,000 car away from them accomplish? Just one more thing to humiliate a hard working person who has been let go from a good job.
I like the idea of a minimum guaranteed income that would provide all working adults a living wage. Having someone working at a full-time job making minimum wage ($8.05 I think) and still being able to collect food stamp is a damning condemnation of our economy. Pay them twice that, get them off government assistance will provide an incredible boost to this country's economy. Of course that would mean a sacrifice by the millionaires and billionaires in this country.
Edited to add: I was out of work several years ago on unemployment and one of the things I had to do was go to a "career" learning class. It was an eight hours "class", which told me exactly what was just fucking obvious to basically anyone looking for a job. What was funny was I already had a job offer, but in order to collect the paltry unemployment comp, I had to go to the class. I accepted the job offer and collected another four weeks of unemployment until I started my new job. The job was 500 miles away, so I could not just leave on a whim.
