(12,925 posts)You said in post #90, broadbrushing an entire group of people is "the exact behaviour I am apologizing for."
You broadbrushed two groups. Jews ("I did not know jews hated us blacks so much" etc.) and Sanders supporters ("His fans are racists" etc.).
Your post was filled with hate toward both groups.
Why does one broadbrushed group deserve an apology, but not the other?
You've even gone out of your way to make clear that you're not apologizing to Bernie supporters (the subject line of the post I'm replying to is "This thread is not an apology to Bernie supporters"
, essentially doubling down on that one.
My feeling is that both thoughts are offensive, and here's how your apology--sincere as I believe it is--strikes me. You recognize that anti-semitism is unacceptable, and you recognize that most people here believe that to be the case as well, so it is easy for you to see the problem with that part of the post. But here on DU, you happen to also be somewhere with a group of people who believe that broadbrushing Bernie supporters is perfectly okay, and will even have your back if you do the same. That doesn't make it right, any more than broadbrushing Jews is okay if you do it on a site that happens to be full of anti-semites.
When I first read your post, I had no idea what you were apologizing for, as I had not seen the other relevant post(s). I do believe you are sincere in your apology for and genuinely regret your emotional and hurtful response, the attitude it expressed toward Jews, and the way it (apparently) reflected on others with whom you associate (something I did not see myself, but I miss plenty of posts here). But I am not sure you fully see the underlying issue that I see, the problem inherent in insulting a large group of people based on the behavior of a few. As I said, I understand that, to some extent, that attitude is probably being enabled here by others doing the same thing and are therefore supportive of you in that respect, when it comes to Bernie supporters. But at its core, I see it as exactly the same mindset that you are apologizing for.
It's not up to me to determine what anyone else (including yourself) will find to be an "acceptable" apology, but my opinion is, you only got halfway there. Respectfully, I'd ask to to consider that no group should be painted with such a broad brush.
