(37,573 posts)but what is described there seems to be
the main tactic of progressives.
It's always about throwing those bombs - the R bomb, the S Bomb, the X bomb, the B bomb, the H bomb. (using the Somerby descriptor, I guess I might call them labels rather than bombs, but they do tend to carry some destructive power). We always seem to be about dividing the world into a) true believers (or Jets) and b) heretics (or Sharks) who are racist, or sexist, or homophobic, or xenophobic, or bigots, or antisemitic or Islamophobes, or all of the above.
Of course, it is a good and noble thing to oppose bigotry in all forms, and all of the people in those groups certainly have skin in the game when it comes to bigotry against their own group.
The trouble becomes all of the jumping at shadows and the quick trigger fingers on those bombs. Somerby has detailed some of this again and again. An article will be written, for example, showing that say 57% of Republicans believe X. And, of course we know that NO DECENT PERSON should ever believe X and therefore this proves that Republicans are all a bunch of bigots. The person who waves this flag at the Sharks, will not note that the same survey also showed that 35% of Democrats also believe X.
A more concrete example in recent days is all the swirling around about the crime bill of 1994. Hillary, of course, is apparently a huge racist because of some word she once used in a speech she once gave, and because she supported that crime bill which incarcerated so many innocent and pure people.
Never mind that a majority of the CBC also voted for that racist crime bill.
