My understanding is that "Drumpf" was Trump's father's, or maybe grandfather's, name, and he changed it to make it sound more American. Drumpf was German.
When someone calls Trump "Drumpf," I guess they're trying to remind readers of Trump's immigrant, specifically German, ancestry. The implication seems to me to be "Look, he's German; he must be evil." I think DU is better than to think that way. In the last century, an evil man led Germany and brought out the evil in many -- too many -- of his countrymen. That is a stain on German history. But that does not make Germans evil generally, nor does it give anyone license to refer to them as such.
For the record -- I guess it's relevant here -- I'm Jewish, and I have close friends who are German. I simply don't think my friends are responsible for the Holocaust, so I see no reason not to have them as friends.
The Drumpf thing just sounds racist to me. Trump would be a nightmare of a president. That is not because his ethnicity is part German.
