I was furious when I wrote that story and I was getting a pretty bad grade up to that point. I was pretty sure I was going to fail the class and I thought what I wrote was crap. Plus my grammar is atrocious. Evidently I got an A on it, as I ended up with a B overall. But, since I thought it was terrible I never wanted to see it again so I didn't leave a stamped envelope on the paper. It might be stored on my account with the university, but I can't even be sure I stored it there.
My fury was based on my premise that hypermasculinty is the reason for slavery and much of the abuse of slaves was rooted in that phenomena, rape falls under the same phenomena. In fact most violence does. Anyone can have hypermasculine behavior though since it has secondary effects. If you beat someone it teaches them aggression. If you constantly put road blocks up for people it breeds aggression and so on.
The book I was analyzing was Kindred by Octavia Butler. The character I focused my analysis on was Rufus Weylin. Part of my fury was also rooted in how I almost felt sorry for this guy. I do understand where he is coming from he was a product of his environment. But, I never shed a tear when he suffered the natural consequences for his behavior.
So, I would definitely recommend picking up a copy of Kindred and reading that as it's much better than my college paper. It is however one of the scariest and heart wrenching stories I have ever read. Octavia Butler starts running with the story right out of the gate and never lets up.
