(53,339 posts)He was commanding a company of the 1st Cav when it was overrun and he called in fire on his own position. Many of his men died, and all of the survivors were wounded. He was severely wounded himself, and his First Sergeant died in his arms with all of his limbs blown away. The Army investigated him to determine if he had acted properly. He was cleared and was awarded the DSC.
I knew him on a subsequent tour when he was commanding the Security Guard Detachment that guarded HQ U.S. Army Vietnam and the General Officers' compound at Long Binh. Every man in the detachment was a hand-picked combat vet, including the commander.
One thing I remember about him is that he had two shaving kits filled with all the meds he had to take as a result of his injuries.
