(58,785 posts)mess. Conservatives on the right led, of course, but this election we seem to be following a bad lead.
More moderate and sensible conservatives didn't frown down their neighbors enough when criticism of another group was taken as permission to ramp up the hostility level. They didn't like the hard-core candidates the uncontrolled ones helped choose in the primaries but voted for them anyway -- in spite of typically bad character and almost always bad judgement -- in a partisan spiral downward that took over 30 years brought the GOP, and the nation, to this point.
Nope. What we need to do is make sure those who are too hostile and dismissive toward other groups to work with them -- both right and left -- lose this election. Then they can go back to being sidelined, complaining about corrupt everyone else is and how government doesn't represent them, while those capable of forming alliances large enough to fix big problems get to work doing just that.
