they will have to change that rule since they are likely to nominate someone who has not competed in the primaries at all. Trump is the only one who has won 8 states but Cruz is close and will probably get there too.

They will undoubtedly change this rule whether Trump gets to 1237 or not. If he does, they will raise the requirement of how many states you have to have won so that Cruz can't be nominated - like they did in 2012 to keep Ron Paul from being officially nominated - so they can 'unite' behind their nominee. If Trump comes up short of 1237 they will have to change the rule to allow the nomination of candidates who have not won (or even competed in) primaries in any states at all.
