For many folks with mental health issues, taking acid is like playing Russian Roulette with their consciousness.
With the *possible* exception of using it in a controlled, peaceful environment, under the guidance of a stable. perceptive individual who has a great deal of personal experience both in using LSD, and in reassuring ("talking down"
people who experience anxiety when tripping.
Some people have bad trips, and these bad trips scare the heck out of them, and cause them to "lose it" or "flip out", as we use to say back in the day. The most common fear I've seen among people having a bad trip is their fear that they will never "come down". Anyone who is not absolutely sure that they can use LSD without flipping out probably shouldn't use it. It can exacerbate an existing psychosis in some people. I've actually known people so frightened by a bad trip that they promise a deity that if he will only let them come down, they will serve him for the rest of their lives. And they later became extreme RW evangelical christian republicans. A living hell of total anxiety and fear.
For many others, using acid can be an invaluable, totally positive life altering experience that greatly adds to their overall happiness and well being.
Like Warren said upthread:
"...those of us who spent our wayward youth running around after the Grateful Dead, have a bit of experience around people on actual LSD. I've seen some freakouts and more than my share of "I just had to get naked", but the reality is that in most cases it's not a lose-your-mind-and-imagine-the-BMW-is-a-balrog type experience.
I suspect this was bath salts or some shit."
